对于很多同时代的诗人而言，布罗茨基是后盾，也是参照。他的作品和经历时时提醒人们：写作确实存在着等级，尽管人们经常在口头和书面上讨论这个问题。这里所说的写作等级不是经由“三段论”推导出来的，也不能通过讨论来判定；而是由我们日日常新的生活和写作去证实的，好比我们对于美丑、真假、善恶、以及自由和专制所作的基本区分。最为重要的是，等级彰显的是对高贵的崇敬，对低劣的鄙弃——不止是蔑视。
