几十年来，美国诗人养成了一种习惯，靠买一本难看的“新世界写作选”去看加纳诗人最近在写什么。 他们从阿赫玛托娃那里偷一句，从聂鲁达那里抢一句，就突然变成了来自维也纳、圣彼得堡、柏林、君士坦丁堡的居民，对“亚马逊和巴拉圭”十分了解。除了能启发出一些诗以外，这样一头扎进去拥抱一个抽象的“世界文学”，没有多大意义。一整个流派的美国诗人都在精心打磨诗句，听起来好像是从一个异国传统翻译过来的，套着陈词滥调，展出人造翻译腔调，仿佛这种破旧而透明的袈裟，可以给他们的诗句增加重量或紧迫感。
