Invitation from Manoa Journal
Manoa: A Pacific Journal of International Writing is a publication of the University of Hawaii Press, published in a fine, carefully edited print edition, and distributed to institutional subscribers worldwide. In a forthcoming issue, we want to address, through literature, the idea of defiance. We want to explore defiance in the deepest and broadest sense, as it arises as action and thought in our lives. Defiance is manifested not merely in political or external resistance. The labor of defiance is rooted profoundly in the internal, the intimate, perhaps even a person’s most innermost nature and beliefs. Defiance involves bringing the inner and outer world to accountability, by insisting on the audacity and complexity of the individual soul.
Manoa prefers unpublished work, but will consider reprints of work that has not been widely available in the West in the English language, and that does not require reprint fees. We welcome submissions from writers in all countries, translated from all languages, in all literary genres.
Please send submissions and queries by December 1, 2020, to
